4 Steps to increase your IT security in 2021: What you need to know

IT security threats are ever changing, and with so many people working and schooling at home in 2021, your organization needs to stay on top of keeping your remote and mobile devices safe.

Knowing what the common IT security threats to your organization are is key, so you can update what you need to and be more vigilant to the current scams and tactics.

In 2020, there was an uptick in IT security threats relating to the COVID-19 pandemic: Ransomware, malware, data breaches and more were all common. Expect these same tactics to continue into 2021 – likely with newer and more sophisticated maneuvers.

Here are some things you need to do now to limit IT security threats to your organization:

• Assemble a team. If you are trying to pull your team together during an attack, you are already behind. Create and train a team that can mobilize to respond to an attack instantly. The faster you respond, the better your chances.
• Create Data access limits. Not everyone at your organization needs access to everything, so if you don’t have channels set up to limit access to only the people who need the data – especially sensitive data – make a plan to do so in 2021.
• Enable Multifactor authentication. If your organization isn’t using multifactor authentication now is the time to start. This extra layer of security can make you undesirable to hackers – and save you from a threat.
• Backup, test, backup, repeat. Do you have adequate backup systems in place? When was the last time you tested them? Now is the time to make sure your backup system is air tight and then test it. Then back it up again and test it again. Make sure it’s effective and ready, should the need arise.
