It’s likely happened to you: You take your aging tech (a phone, a laptop, a tablet) in for what seems to be a simple repair but you are told, “No dice.” The parts aren’t made anymore. The big brands are purposely making it difficult or impossible to get repairs, in the hopes you’ll upgrade to the next, more expensive, device.
But this problem could soon be a thing of the past. There are Right to Repair reforms brewing across the country, including in Ohio. In a nutshell, these Right to Repair reforms would stop manufacturers from restricting access to repair manuals and parts needed to repair or refurbish devices.
Instead of being forced to buy a new laptop, phone or tablet, you could have it fixed – saving you money and keeping old tech out of the landfill.
The reasons behind the current limits are because the tech manufacturers need you to keep buying new devices. Sometimes, they tempt you with upgrades or new features but consumers are also backed into a corner if they can’t have their old devices repaired. Thus, the cycle continues: The new product is awesome and the old product is scrapped.
At Tek Experts, we stand with the technology repair industry and the Right to Repair movement. We firmly believe it will bring real – and positive – changes to the electronics industry.
What it boils down to is this:
Adding used technology to landfills only puts more harmful metals and chemicals there, which could contaminate our soil and groundwater. Plus, these resources are already limited.
What can consumers do? You can take action and get involved! Lend your voice to the cause and support Right to Repair legislation in your state. Your vote in this November’s election will support candidates and incumbents who have positions on the Right to Repair issue. Consider this issue as you would other issues as you determine your choices on this fall’s ballot. To see which legislation is pending in Ohio, and which legislators are supporting it, check out Ohio information here or search for another state in the Advocacy menu.
